The Framework
The first and most crucial step is to recognize the underlying issues that compromise the integrity and livability of a space. In this case, a double height space and basement were examined, revealing problems such as inadequate natural light, poor ventilation, and a disjointed layout. The spaces were cramped, disconnected, and lacking the basic elements essential for a healthy and secure living environment.
a. Mezzanine facing challenges with lighting, ventilation, and integration into the living space.
b. Narrow and confined stairs and circulations.
c. Ventilation and restricted lighting limited to the upper floor.
d. Kitchen and service areas lacking both lighting and ventilation.
e. Overall disconnections due to excessive partitions.
f. Inadequate ventilation and lighting in the basement, compounded by humidity and habitability issues.
The Transformation
The project laid the groundwork for a transformation that prioritizes human needs and improves habitability by addressing fundamental problems. It focused on three key spatial strategies that redefined the entire space. A central void and new connections were introduced to create a cohesive visual articulation. This reconfiguration freed up the facade, allowing it to fulfill its true purpose of maximizing natural light and ventilation.
The Result
Every detail was carefully considered to accommodate the communal lifestyle required for modern co-living. Storage was optimized, both individual and group workspaces were created, and smart layouts for kitchens and bathrooms were designed. Shared social spaces were integrated with varying levels of privacy, ensuring a balance between community and independence.
a. Mezzanine with ample lighting and ventilation.
b. Kitchen separated from the bedroom area, featuring its own ventilation system that connects to the inner courtyard.
c. Separate bathrooms equipped with natural ventilation.
d. Efficient connections designed for a compact space.
e. Rooms with ample lighting and ventilation.
f. Facade openings designed to enhance lighting and ventilation.
